Version 0.7.0-beta1 test (and 0.7.0-beta2, beta3, beta4) - ENDED

This is not a stable release, it's only meant for people to test new features. Do not use any important vault for testing, because you are not able to convert your data.json settings file back to an earlier version, and your shell commands might break and do strange things!

Version 0.7.0 will bring some changes that can be more unstable than previous changes so far. Mainly, it boils down to these two:

• Special characters in variable values will be escaped by default (issue Variable values should be escaped #11). This is a breaking change.
• Added support for choosing a shell that will be used to execute shell commands (issue Operating system specific versions of shell commands + shell selection #76). A breaking change is that on Linux and Macintosh, the default shell might be different from what it used to be before 0.7.0, and shell commands might run a bit differently on Linux and Mac. On Windows, the default shell should have stayed the same (usually CMD).

Even though this plugin is still in its 0.x era, meaning that it should not be considered as stable anyway, I still wanted to make an extra step before introducing these changes to everyone. The idea is that multiple people can test these new features and see if they work for them, and give me feedback on things that should be fixed. Please give feedback regarding the new features/possible issues in this topic! 🙂

@FelipeRearden, I'd like to ask you to participate in this beta test, please! 🙂 I'm still preparing instructions on how to install the Shell commands test suite, and it still needs a few tweaks to make it work on Mac, but you can do some freeform testing even without the test suite. The test suite will be quite broad, and can require quite a lot of work to get used to, but if you have time and willingness, I'd like to ask you to use it to do Mac tests on it in the future (once all the instructions on how to use it are in place).

• I’m having some hard time in my house this week but I can start next Monday.

Just to let you know that we don’t have a manisfest.json In the Assets for the first bet version. I can install without this file without any problem :)

To be honest I'm not 100% certain, but I think beta releases do not need a manifest.json file in the assets, because BRAT creates it from manifest-beta.json during beta installation.

In this beta release I wanted to test leaving out manifest.json so that I will know if it can be left out (in betas), and at least for me the beta installation via BRAT has worked great. For stable releases I will include manifest.json again in the assets.

Interface Suggestions

Sorry, I've missed this message yesterday! It's seems that I can easily miss messages, if mutliple messages go to different parts of the same discussion. My bad!

The modal window's different width for each tab is actually something I'm aware of, and I left it like it was because I wasn't sure if it's so important to fix. But I think I can fix it - perhaps? When I developed the tab system, it used to be even worse. The modal's height changed based on which tab was active (due to the fact that different tabs have different amount of content - some have short, some have tall content). But I fixed the height problem because it made it harder to click the tab buttons when they always changed place vertically. maybe I can try to adapt the same fix for width, too?

Good catch. It's a small thing, but would be nice to find a fix for it. I don't know yet what causes this. Maybe the General tab's content defines the page height, and the height is not updated when switching tabs?

New beta version: 0.7.0-beta2

This new beta only contains changes to tab layout. No changes to features. Even though the new beta has a version beta2, let's use this existing beta1 thread for continuing the discussion.

Instructions on how to upgrade to a newer beta version can be found from here.

I might even try to change the layout completely to something like the example you mentioned here: #78 (comment)

I did not make the tab layout yet like that (maybe I'll do it for before releasesing 0.7.0), but the layout is improved and should work far better on dark themes than beta1.

I tested now on Linux. Same problem as for Mac, newlines get removed. On Windows PowerShell it works. I'll continue researching this.

Thank's but this is not actually so specifically related to {{clipboard}} and {{selection}}, but rather to all variables. I used them as examples just because it's easy to produce newlines with them.

1- {{clipboard}} and {{selection}} for MacOS Shell is not necessary to use -e in echo : echo {{clip/selec}} and printf {{clip/selc}} working perfect on multi lines with line breaks

This is excellent news! 😎 And nice that you put the big heading for beta version 4. I forgot yesterday to mention in this discussion that beta4 is released. I like to do this kind of mentions so it's easier in later to go through old discussions (kind of like "logs") and see the history of how things progressed.

There's only a couple things left for me to do in the documentation (#100). After that I think 0.7.0 is ready for an actual release. 👍

Can you please just check that it exists? And if there are multiple files beginning with data-backup, please report that too. There should be only one at this time.

(Backup files can be freely deleted if you don't want to keep them. SC does not read or do anything with the backup files after creating them. They just lay around in case a user want's to manually use them to restore old settings.)

Only contains these small tab layout fixes: #102 and #103 . I feel that this starts to be quite solid. If no problems will appear during testing, this might be the last beta, and 0.7.0 might be just behind the corner. 🙂
