User Test Report
From the user tests, we were able to find and address many bugs and other usability issues thanks to our user tester's help! A shortlist of future improvements includes:
- increase the button sizes to improve visibility
- allow the user to refresh the screen
- change picture-taking for Android so users do get to the camera app
- inform users when updates have been successfully submitted
We've managed to:
- increase the button sizes to improve visibility
- allow the user to refresh the screen
- change picture-taking for Android so users do get to the camera app
and plan to in the future:
- inform users when updates have been successfully submitted
The full report can be found below.
When performing the user tests for the Turtle Tracker App, we tested the user’s ability to navigate the map screen, locate the turtle list, add new turtle sightings with all relevant information, review sightings, edit sightings, and edit turtle data. The user was also prompted for general feedback, reactions to the user interface (UI), and suggestions for improvements to the app.
Users were generally able to understand the app quickly and easily. All users were able to scroll and navigate on the map screen without problems, and almost all users quickly understood the function of buttons on the map. The turtle list was also easily found by all users and users were able to input all the relevant information when adding the new turtle sightings. Users also gave us good feedback about the general look and feel of the UI. Some key issues that the users noted were buttons that were too small and difficult to click, a lack of a confirmation after a successful new sighting submission along with a refreshing delay, and an issue of navigating to the wrong screen when pressing the back button after adding a sighting. We also discovered a few device-specific issues on Android where some of the buttons were unclickable and picture taking and editing took the user out of the app.
Users also gave us many helpful suggestions. One suggestion that multiple users made was to limit the map screen to the Ecosystem Preserve or to have the map screen load to that location rather than to the location of the user. One user suggested that we may change the map screen from satellite to map view to make the turtle viewings easier to see. Another user thought we should include a paragraph about the Preserve’s turtle study somewhere in the app.
To increase visibility of buttons and to make them easily clickable, we are going to increase the button sizes along with the space around the buttons. We also will change the picture-taking for Android because we would like users to be able to add a photo without having to leave the Turtle Tracker App. To remove doubt about turtle sighting submission, we will also add a load screen or text toast to inform users that their sighting was submitted successfully and the sightings screen is refreshing.
