This adds support for using the Meson build system.
It has been tested on OpenBSD 6.7 amd64 and CentOS 8 amd64, and should work without issues when compiling for or on i386 systems. Some work has been done towards building for 32-bit ARM, but is incomplete at this point.
A quick start section for using Meson has been added to the user manual, however content regarding the original method of building has not been removed or modified, as this is meant to be a generic rather than tailored build.
This PR does include some minor code changes that were not directly part of adding Meson, however they are needed for a clean build on modern platforms, since some examples relied on the now deprecated `gets' function.
