A list of the files being deleted

Nemo currently ask if you would like to permanently delete these files, but if you are deleting more then one file it does not display the names of what you are deleting so if you accidentally included a wrong file or not is a mystery, and that is not a good thing.

The solution I use is to delete to the Trash folder and only empty the trash (i.e., permanently delete) when I'm sure there's nothing in there I'll need again.

Then I have to go through them a second time with what could be any where from 10 to 100 or more files, and my problem with deleting more then on file is still not solved. Are you seriously saying it is to hard to list more then one file name? The file manager clearly knows what it is deleting just provide a list to read if I so chose.

My point was that if I discover I deleted a file I need, then I can restore it from the trash. And if I go several weeks without needing to restore anything, it is pretty safe to empty the trash without needing to examine each file.

You've selected the files to begin with, why do you need them to be listed for you?

What if there are 1000000 files in a folder you've selected? This is pretty unrealistic and seems redundant.

Sorry, that's really simple stuff:

1. delete normally, never permanently
2. if you need to restore, open the trash
3. switch from icon view to list view and sort files by date.
4. Shift-select and restore your files.

The solution to your problem is to view files in list view.

Why would date view fix anything? A file created 6 moths ago, one 2 weeks ago, and one today all over the place will not help me, and I need to use the thumb nails so I can see what i'm doing, or if the over write and/or combining is done, remove the old sepate parts, and only keep the combined version. List view is my least favorite view their is, and list view will not help me where do even click to start selecting? and is not relevant at all to my request.

And for the last time I DO NOT WANT TO DELETE THEM TWICE, and what the hell is "delete normally" supposed to be?

I do have backups but they are only taken daily (don't you dare start with the "backup every 5 minutes" excuse you are probably thinking) at 2:00AM, even so restoring damaged or lost files is a chore, and is a very rare occurance so I will not use a worse view just to fix it, which it won't because the problem is not solved. And I dared to think a better NEMO experience for new or old users, which would also fix a weird inconsistency. I even answered your question, took screenshots, bothered make it easy to read, and provided justification.

I take it you don't want idea's around nemo or hideable app indicators?
they are just fine no improvements or problems to fix it's the users fault for wanting better, I got the point.

1. When selecting many files at once the expanded file names are not shown if there are any files under said file, and if you are selecting files requiring the screen to scroll you can't see them at the same time. So double checking requires moving the mouse over every single file to see the full name, and scrolling, so it gets difficult to say the least pretty quickly.

You are still going to have to use a mouse to see all the files, if you want to delete more than a very few. And I'm still baffled by how you don't know the name of each file as you select it to be deleted. If you don't know its name, why would you select it in the first place? If you can't see the full names of files in Icon view, why not switch to List view? You would see a lot more files at once if you used List view. Something is missing here, especially since you are asking to be able to see a list anyway. So why not start with a list? What requires you to use Icon view?

But you want to sort through a list, regardless. Am I understanding correctly that for some reason you can't look at the list before clicking the Delete button, and that it wouldn't work to look at a list of files in the Trash window either? I'm sorry, but I'm baffled by what appears to the reasoning here.

And how do you know you wrongly deleted a file under the current situation? If you used the Trash and realized that a file had been incorrectly deleted, you could recover it. This seems so simple, that I just can't understand what the problem is.

4. When the confirmation box asks me if I would like to permanently delete these files, like I was saying earlier I just want a drop down arrow so I could read the full list of what i'm agreeing to delete, with the full file names shown.

And then what happens, when there is a file in the list that you don't want to delete? You already had a chance to perfect the list before clicking the Delete button, so I'm not sure how having a list at this point is going to be of actual use. You'll still have to read through all of the file names anyway, right? Why not do it before clicking Delete, instead of after, when at that point all you can do is cancel and start all over again? What is so different between looking at a list of files in a message box, as compared to looking at a list of files in a File Manager box?

Just let me click a drop down arrow, read the full file names, and click the delete button if I chose to. That is all i'm asking for.

Well, as I said, I don't understand how this will make your life any easier, but it's your computer. Perhaps if the devs read this over, one of them will be intrigued and code up what you want.

Why do you "need" icon view? To preview files, press the spacebar key on a selected file.

And if the Thumbnailer can't preview your file, use apps, instead of Nemo:

• View pictures in Pix, or better DigiKam.
• For PDF use XReader or similar.
• etc.

And before you grow a mess, check your files one by one, before you delete anything.

Finally, it would be easier for you to start learning to code, so your computer does exactly what you want. People in here try only to help.

I quick full name view i can just scroll in the delete popup warning, is less reasonable then putting them in the trash, looking through all of the files, realize something is wrong, and go the trash just to retrieve it, and then empty the trash?

Or alternatively keep changing my file view to make things even harder to locate and keep track of visually, just to also put them in the trash, and then probably restore the wrong thing anyway, and lose what I want to keep, and still have a inconsistency, and a inconvenience that has bugged me for 6 years

right, well I have have stuff to do, about 20,000 documents to remember and keep track of, and more to come. So no I do not know most of the file names, just the ones that are relevant at the time, hence why I only care what is deleted, moving things around just makes things worse.
If it can list 1 file name why not 10? 20? 5? If nothing else it looks that was the plan at one point, but it never happened for some reason.

And to question 4, obviously not click the delete button, click the cancel button instead, and select smaller groups around it (creates room for more mistakes and inconvenient but necessary) or something else, and again double check the files in the drop down and if it's correct then click delete. I do not understand the confusion here.

Ideal result: selects large group of files-->right clicks--> left clicks the "delete" option-->reads "would you like to permanently delete these 15 files"--> read the drop down list "that's the right ones"--> left clicks "delete".

non-Ideal result: selects large group of files-->right clicks--> left clicks the "delete" option-->reads "would you like to permanently delete these 15 files"--> read the drop down list "that's not the right ones"--> left clicks "cancel".

Currant result: selects large group of files-->mouses over all selected files and scrolls around--> right clicks--> left clicks the "delete" option-->reads "would you like to permanently delete these 15 files"--> seems correct-->left clicks "delete".

One results in a quick list of only the files selected for deletion, with no question if you have it right, and the other one results in a subjective "seems right" with a super a useful number you might think was kinda helpful depending on what you are doing.
which one is more concise and helpful?
