Subject: Yes, your fork is safe (with exceptions) + Detachment steps You have hit on a very common concern. Here is the breakdown of what happens and what you should do:
Public Repositories: YES. If the upstream (original) repository is public and is deleted, your fork will generally remain. GitHub automatically "detaches" your fork, and it becomes its own standalone repository. You won't lose your code. Private Repositories: NO. If you fork a private repository and the original owner deletes it (or removes your access), your fork is usually deleted as well. DMCA Takedowns: If the upstream repo is removed due to a legal/copyright (DMCA) violation, your fork might be disabled or removed along with it.
Check for "Detachment": Look at the top left of your repository page. If it no longer says "forked from [user/repo]", GitHub has already detached it. It is now a standalone repo. Contact Support (if needed): In rare cases where the parent is deleted but your fork still thinks it is "attached" (causing issues with PRs or network graphs), you can contact GitHub Support to manually detach it. Update Your Readme: Since the original source is gone, it is good etiquette to update your README to mention that you are maintaining a copy of the now-deleted project (and perhaps link to the original author's profile if known, for credit). Summary: For public open-source projects, you are usually safe. The system is designed to prevent code loss. |

I have sensitive repositories only me have access. It's my lonely works during decades 12 hours per day everyday. I don't want anybody can access because what I did can be broken, and I really don't want it, and because I worked a lot for nothing good in exchange.
A guy streamed my source codes on Twitch 10 years ago, now the same guy published a video with my source codes again, this time on Youtube, but the video is not listed. He deleted his Twitch channel because I scolded him on his Twitch channel, but now he did it on Youtube while hiding. I never gave my works to anybody, especially not to this guy, and he still dares to put his name on my works.
It arrived someone entered my home, accessed my PC, using my password, without I was there, and without I gave to anyone my home key and my PC password. I had some modifications of my files with dates when I wasn't at home which broke my equation of state model I was working and writting 100,000 lines. It was 15 years ago.
Please help me! I'm almost dying.
Can Microsoft delete my works outside of what I'm the owner? I want a total deletion of my works. My works are only in my GitHub repositories, my PC and a USB storage key I'm the owner and staying at home. But there are illegal copies outside because I was stolen.
Is there a site to report copyrights infringement? Other than on GitHub which never was satisfying.
Need I go to see with a policeman? I'm terrribly abused in my own country.
I'm fed up with these people and this guy who put their names on my works, while they insult me, ignore me, and do nothing good.
