What are the plans of the Kustomize community regarding KRM functions?

I am a contributor of the Nephio project. We built heavily on the concept of KRM functions, but now we see that both the KRM function catalog and the KRM function SDK are left unmaintained. So we are bit uncertain about keep relying on them.

Your documentation here states that KRM functions are the officially supported way to extend Kustomize.
Are you still planning on relying on KRM functions? Are you planning to take part in maintaining them in the future (maybe together with other projects like Nephio)?

I don't think Kustomize people will deprecate features like KRM functions.

Although the links you mentioned are separate projects, and have different governance (recently), there is an fn framework in Kustomize project (kyaml/fn/framework).
