Here are some interesting ideas from users on menu icons:

• Menu Icon without the dock icon
• A menu icon which would pop up a window into which you can drag and drop into - would be super nice so you have access anywhere (instead of the standalone app)
• alternative would be like a global shortcut which would bring up a hover menu into which you can drop and convert
