It would be great to have the option to choose the region "Europe, Stockholm (eu-north-1)” in addition to the currently available “Europe, Frankfurt (eu-central-1)”.
For sites primarily targeting the Nordic countries, Stockholm would be a logical choice that would offer improved latency, fewer hops, bandwidth stability etc (disregarding frontend CDNs). It could also be an advantage given the increased focus on data residency and ESG compliance strategies - especially in the Nordic public sector.
More importantly, however, is the potential sustainability aspect of adding Stockholm as an alternativ to Frankfurt as data centers in Stockholm have a significantly lower carbon footprint, primarily due to Sweden’s exceptionally clean energy mix.
While exact emissions data are notoriously difficult to confirm (in part due to the limited transparency from AWS), one source estimates the “Emission Factor” of Stockholm at 0.0000212 kg CO₂e per CPU-hour, compared to Frankfurt’s 0.0007483 kg CO₂e per CPU-hour — over 35 times higher! (Source: https://www.climatiq.io/data/explorer?category=Cloud+Computing+-+CPU&search=AWS&data_version=%5E20)
Even with room for modeling error, the difference is meaningful. And the difference is similarly clear in the general and established data on carbon intensity of energy generation in Europa:
• Sweden: 22g CO₂e / kWh
• Germany: 343g CO₂e / kWh
(Source: https://app.electricitymaps.com/map/72h/hourly)
And in a wider life-span perspective, including embodied carbon and multiple emissions scopes, AWS is showing some additional commitment to sustainability in Sweden, such as the use of lower-carbon steel in new Stockholm datacenters (https://www.aboutamazon.eu/news/aws/aws-uses-lower-carbon-steel-in-the-construction-of-new-swedish-data-centres)
(To be fair, Frankfurt (eu-central-1) is also classified as “green” by the Green Web Foundation, but that classification primarily reflects the purchase of certificates rather than actual energy use emissions, source: https://www.thegreenwebfoundation.org/support/i-use-amazon-web-services-aws-am-i-a-green-site-service/)
I believe including the Stockholm (eu-north-1) region would align meaningfully with Pixel & Tonic’s sustainability commitments. It would also support us and other users in making environmentally responsible choices. In Norway — one of our primary markets— sustainability is an increasingly decisive factor for clients, partners, and employees alike. Being able to choose a climate-strategic data center location would be a strong asset in our sales and communication efforts, as well as in our own internal sustainability strategy.
Thanks!
