ESP32-S3 DevKit (Dual USB-C ports) users!

I recently started building my 2nd Tonex One controller, thought to use the DevKit boards for better stability. I bought a N8R2 board first, and I realised I can power it using the COM port, the connect the Tonex One through the USB port, essentially keeping the build really clean and easy.

I bought a second board, this time a N16R8 version. But it can't be properly powered the same way through the COM port. The board powers up but wifi does not connect and the Tonex One doesn't get powered. Any similar experiences or tips? Tried the 1.07 as well as the latest beta version.

Hi.
A few people missed the part about needing to close the OTA jumper on the back of the board. Without this being done, the Tonex won't get power. This doesn't explain the lack of WiFi though. Maybe fix the OTA jumper, and double check that you have got the right firmware. The N8R2 and N16R8 use different firmware.

Yes you need to solder the 2 pads together. This is needed to make the Tonex work.

Yes, connected that little link at the back. The board works perfect with an external power connected as above, but I wanted to try powering it with the COM port, and USB port connected to Tonex One. Works with the N8R2 but not the N16R8

I dont actually have an N16R8, only the N8R2. I have seen there are ones around made by Espressif themselves, and other clones.
Do you have a link to the place you purchased it from? Or maybe if they have a schematic diagram of it?

The schematic I have is quite simple in the power area. 5v from UBS1 goes through diode D1 and then goes to regulator U3 to provide the 3.3v for the ESP32. And USB-OTG jumper links 5v to the Vbus pin on USB2.
Maybe you could check with multimeter and see where the voltage is lost.

I have this ESP32-S3 working with MVave Chocolate powering by the USB.
I've connected Tonex One to the USB-C PORT
The COM USB port is connected to a simple smartphone usb charger

As you can see I can change midi on the video... but now I'm just getting a blue led from Tonex One.
When I plug the Tonex On to PC by USB-C it works, but when I use the USB-C from Com port, I'm getting a blue Led.

The manual says Blue Led is: Setup Mode??

Hi. I think the issue will be the smartphone charger. A few other users have had issues with these also. If it is rated at 500 mA, that is not high enough. It would need to be 1 amp minimum.
The flashing led is likely the voltage sagging due to the lack of current, resulting in a brownout reset.

Do you have a higher current USB supply that you could try?

You might be able to help me.
I bought an ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1 N16R8 while my 1.69 arrives.
And I wanted to install the TonexOneController_V1.0.10.2_beta_2_DevKitC_N16R8.
I have the com port and I can launch, but after that, I only get dots in a row.
I imagine there's a little something to do?

Hi. With the DevKit-C, it has 2 USB ports. Make sure you use the right one, like shown below.
With the power off hold the boot button and then connect power.
The select the comm port and program.

Note also the DevKit-C has a little jumper on the back that needs to closed to make the Tonex work.
