M5AtomS3R Issue

I have bought the M5AtomS3R and I can't make it work.
I downloaded the firmware (version 1.8.2 and 1.9.2), followed the steps and it didn't work.
When I connect the 5V power supply to the M5AtomS3R and the USB cable to the ToneX One, the ToneX One powers up but the M5AtomS3R screen does not show anything. Furthermore I cannot find the wifi network for the tonex one controller, and I can't connect the m-vave chocolate to it.
Am I doing something wrong maybe on the firmware upload to the M5AtomS3R ?
By the way I have succsfully done projects with the Waveshare Zero and the Waveshare 1.69" display development boards...

It sounds like you have done everything right.
I would suggest to try a full erase, and program it again. See if that helps.

If that doesn't help, open the case and check for any connectors that may have fallen out or similar.

Did you power it up with the manufacturer firmware when it arrived, to make sure the board was not faulty?

I did load the builds twice, I dont know if there is a way to fully erase the software other than uploading the build again.
As for the boot, yes I did boot when it arrived and the display worked :/ Is there any factory reset or erase process to be done ?

Oh well, when I flash UI Flow2 to the M5AtomS3R, it works. However when I flash the ToneX Controller software nothing happens :/

Maybe I am doing something wrong while flashing the software to the M5AtomS3R. Is it different than the Waveshare boards?

I am running the latest beta fine on an Atom, powered by a USB powerbank.
It does seem to not work if the power is applied to Tonex first, usually when first connected, but then it works fine when power is supplied to both at the same time.

Well you can't power the ToneX One before the M5AtomS3R.
Because the Power goes to the M5AtomS3R, and then to the tonex one. However you can power M5AtomS3R then connect the tonex one.

I tried both ways, with and without the ToneX One connected to the M5AtomS3R. Neither work :/

Are you 100% sure is the S3R? Not the S3?

The S3 (no R) has a different version of the processor, without the external PSRAM. The code is expecting to find this PSRAM chip and will be crashing when its not found.
Its the same processor type as the Waveshare Zero, but the Zero does not have an LCD to drive so its OK.

Yes, the AtomS3R code here works with the AtomS3R-ext. Personally prefer it to the waveshare zero. In terms of midi, refer to this discussion, some edits in the code were required to change the midi data pin to connect to the Midi module just using the grove port (grove port pins are 5v, GND, G1, G2, Builty's code requires G38 to be connected to TX of midi module).

To use the midi module with the code as-is, what I did was, using the stock 4-wire connector/cable, cut the wire connecting to the TX input in the midi module, and connect it with G38 pin in the AtomS3R. Midi in works well. I have not tested the midi through though, planning to build a second one to test.

Bakarasche has done some crazy work on the AtomS3R, check out his blog.

I think the AtomS3R is a very attractive platform if you don't need touch functionality,
and the AtomS3R has a case with a universal PCB called Proto Kit provided by M5Stack.
I mounted it on that board with a DC jack for 5V and a 3.5mm TRS jack.

This is an introduction to MIDI control of TX1 from HX Stomp.

This is the MIDI IN circuit mounted on a ProtoKit board. I used small surface mount optocouplers, which are very difficult to solder.
I wired MIDI RX through the optocoupler to the TRS jack, so I can input TRS-MIDI directly without an external MIDI module. Maybe this is the smallest TX1 controller with MIDI I/F and LCD.
I have onboard swich1,2 wired to the Grove connector on this version.

There is no video, but there is also a 3rd Version.
I can preset up/down with Bluetooth Switch,
so, I edited the source code so that Delay ON/OFF and Tap Tempo can be set on onboard swich1,2.

In the latest 1.092 version, Greg implemented more elegant and free MIDI CC assignment to onboard swich.

Personally, I like AtomS3R's built-in switch feature.
No touch functionality, but you can switch by pressing the LCD.
I assigned this switch (GPIO41) to onboard swich3.
I also edited the source code to add a ring up type (1,2,3,4,→20→1,2,3,4) PresetUP and use it.
*I am using MIDICC's free number 120.

I can do preset browsing by simply pressing the LCD on the unit without an external switch.

The second half of the 2nd version video shows how this LCD switch works, so please watch it if you like.

I like this project very much because it is open source, so you can customize it in various ways to make it easy to use.

and most of the ESP32-S3 platforms used in this project are uncertified and cannot be used.
The only products that can be used are M5Stack products such as the AtomS3R.
However, M5Stack sells a variety of external modules, cases, and expansion boards, and it is very convenient to be able to use them.

Are you asking about the 5V to 9V boost circuit?

What I implemented on the ProtoKit board is a DC connector for 5V input. This is directly connected to the 5V input terminal of the AtomS3R. I connect a 5V (2A) output AC adapter to this connector and power the AtomS3R, Tonex One (via USB cable), and external modules via the Grove connector if necessary.

I do not implement a 5V-9V conversion circuit in my ProtoKit.
I would actually like to include a converter circuit that steps down from 9V to 5V so that it can be powered from a typical 9V power supply used in effects pedals, but unfortunately I don't have the space to do so.

However, the power consumption of the AtomS3R + Tonex One is quite large, so the design specifications of the power supply circuit need to be considered.
But I find it a lot of fun to think about modifying the circuit and source code.
Let's continue exchanging information if you'd like.

Sorry you are right, it should be a circuit to step down from 9V to 5V, since most pedal power supplies are 9V. I used the circuit in the link below to convert from 9V to 5V with the Waveshare Zero project I made.

The reason to make a step down circuit is to integrate the ToneX One controller to an existing pedalboard more easily.

Much less polished than the build by @bakarasche , but finally managed to finish an AtomS3R-ext with MIDI module build. The standard AtomS3R screen is way too small to see on a pedalboard anyway so this screen-less version is perfect for me.

The MIDI through seems to work if the TXD=IN=OUT option is chosen. 3.5mm audio output does not work, which is expected.

I like your implementation of the M5 Stack MIDI module.
This one has DIN connectors and even a built-in MIDI sound source, which is interesting for many uses.

It is larger than my proto kit so I can implement various additional features.
It also has a DC adapter, so I think I can implement a 9V to 5V buck module with it.
Even if I want to implement a MIDI IN circuit, I can use a common DIP package optocoupler (like PC900),
Soldering is also easy.
Since there is a lattice window that can be easily folded, it seems possible to mount an external module.
Please check it out once. It's inexpensive.

It took long but finally i got the M5 Stacl S3R with the M5 Midi setup. It was really easy to setup!
